In our last post «WINTER PRUNING, THE SECRET OF THE NEW VINTAGE», we talked about the wonderful benefits of pruning and how idyllic this vineyard activity can be for lovers of the field and viticulture.

However, like almost everything in life, it also has a dark side. During these winter months, the need to endure the icy winter temperatures, which makes this field work an extreme moment. A hard work situation for our field workmates that requires training and the capacity for suffering.

And it is that we have been in the Ribera del Duero for several days with freezing temperatures, below zero, during the early hours and part of the morning. And some of you may wonder…

How does the cold affect the vineyard?

Thanks to the fact that we are in the winter period of «stop vegetative «, the constant low temperatures do not negatively affect the plant. This stop means that the sap stops circulating through the plant and stops, it is the period of hibernation of the same so that it can rest and recover.

As long as the temperatures are not below -13ºC or -15ºC, we can trust that our vines will withstand these storms perfectly and that it is time to help them with pruning for their correct vegetative development.

.

The oldest vineyards stand out for being the ones that best resist weather conditions due to the depth and thickness of their roots.

.

Another advantage is the natural elimination or inhibition of the remains of fungi, insects or pathogens that have remained on the vine, in addition to avoiding, in the event that dry pruning is carried out, that the plant bleeds, that is, let the sap flow.

.

Finally, if it were to snow, this would mean an extra water supply for the plant, since the earth would absorb the water and it could supply it later when it does not have it and needs it.

.

We conclude with two ideas: that extreme cold is very beneficial for the vineyard during these winter months. And that our workmates will not have an easy work, being in nature at low temperatures for hours, but every day the vineyard gives them spectacular photographs that will compensate for the work.

.

For a few days we will continue in the Country of Ribernalia!

.

We hope you found it interesting.

Greetings from the entire Vega de Yuso team!
